The Kids Other Sports Don’t Want Can Find Success in Martial Arts
Not every kid is the fastest.
Not every kid is naturally coordinated.
Not every kid gets picked first.
And not every child feels like they belong on a traditional sports team.
We’ve met plenty of those kids at Mentor ATA Martial Arts.
In fact, some of our greatest success stories started with children who couldn’t find success anywhere else.
That’s one of the things we love most about martial arts.
There is a place for you here.
Traditional Sports Aren’t the Right Fit for Every Child
Team sports can be incredible for kids.
We have plenty of students who play soccer, football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, hockey, and other sports while also training in Taekwondo.
Some kids are naturally athletic and thrive in those environments.
But what about the kids who don’t?
The child who isn’t very coordinated yet.
The child who struggles to keep up.
The child who doesn’t make the team.
The child who spends most of the game on the bench.
The child who doesn’t enjoy having their performance compared to everyone else’s.
Or the child who simply hasn’t found an activity where they feel successful.
Those kids need somewhere to go too.
Martial arts can be that place.
We Don’t Need Your Child to Be Athletic
One of the questions parents sometimes ask us before their child begins is:
“What if my child isn’t athletic?”
That’s okay.
We don’t expect beginners to already have the skills we’re here to teach them.
If your child struggles with coordination, we’ll work on coordination.
If they need better balance, we’ll develop balance.
If they’re out of shape, we’ll help improve their fitness.
If they’re shy, we’ll gradually give them opportunities to become more confident.
If focusing is difficult, they’ll practice focus every class.
You don’t have to arrive at Mentor ATA already good at martial arts.
You come here to get better.
Nobody Sits on the Bench
This is one of the biggest differences between martial arts and many traditional sports.
There isn’t a starting lineup.
Your child isn’t competing with another student for playing time.
They’re participating.
They’re kicking.
They’re punching.
They’re practicing their form.
They’re working with instructors.
They’re improving.
Every child gets an opportunity to learn.
For a kid who has spent years feeling like they weren’t good enough at sports, that can be a pretty powerful experience.
Success Looks Different for Every Student
At Mentor ATA, we don’t believe every child’s success needs to look the same.
For one student, success might mean winning a State, District, National, or World Championship.
For another, it might mean earning their next belt.
For another, it might be performing in front of people for the first time.
Maybe it’s finally remembering an entire form.
Maybe it’s developing enough coordination to perform a kick they couldn’t do six months ago.
Maybe it’s making friends.
Maybe it’s simply walking through the door confidently instead of hiding behind Mom or Dad.
Those are all wins.
That’s one of the reasons martial arts can work for so many different types of kids.
Everyone has something they can work toward.
Progress Happens at Their Pace
Some children pick up martial arts quickly.
Others take longer.
Both can succeed.
The belt system gives students achievable goals and allows them to see their progress over time.
White belt becomes orange.
Orange becomes yellow.
One skill leads to another.
Eventually, a child who once struggled to perform the basics can look back and realize how far they’ve come.
That realization builds something incredibly important.
Confidence based on actual accomplishment.
They didn’t receive it because someone told them they were great.
They earned it because they kept working.
The Child Who Struggles May Learn the Biggest Lessons
We’ve seen this repeatedly since opening Mentor ATA in 2002.
Sometimes the naturally talented child has an easier beginning.
But the child who struggles learns something different.
They learn how to persevere.
They learn how to accept coaching.
They learn that improvement takes time.
They learn how to deal with frustration.
They learn that being bad at something today doesn’t mean they’ll be bad at it forever.
And eventually they learn:
“I can do things I didn’t think I could do.”
That’s a lesson that can change the way a child approaches everything.
School.
Friendships.
Other sports.
Future jobs.
Life.
And Yes, Athletic Kids Thrive Here Too
Martial arts isn’t only for kids who struggle with sports.
Some of our students are tremendous athletes.
They play multiple sports and use Taekwondo to develop additional coordination, flexibility, speed, balance, focus, and body control.
Others take martial arts competition as far as they possibly can, competing at regional and national events and chasing State, District, and World titles.
That’s the great thing about martial arts.
It can meet children where they are.
The highly competitive athlete has a place here.
The child who has never played a sport has a place here.
And everyone in between has a place here.
Everyone Is Working Toward Something
Walk into a Mentor ATA class and you’ll see students with different abilities, personalities, goals, and backgrounds training together.
But they’re all working toward something.
Their next skill.
Their next stripe.
Their next belt.
Their next tournament.
Their next personal breakthrough.
Students encourage one another because everyone understands what it’s like to be learning.
Eventually, the beginner becomes an advanced student.
The child who once needed extra help may become the student helping someone else.
That’s when martial arts becomes more than an activity.
It becomes a community.
Your Child Doesn’t Have to “Make the Team”
At Mentor ATA, we’re not holding tryouts to decide which children deserve to participate.
We’re looking for something much simpler.
Does your child want to learn?
Can they show up?
Can they listen?
Can they try?
Can they bring a good attitude?
If so, we’ll meet them where they are and start working from there.
They don’t have to prove they’re athletic enough to belong.
They already belong.
What If Your Child Just Hasn’t Found Their Thing Yet?
Maybe you’ve tried soccer.
Baseball.
Basketball.
Dance.
Gymnastics.
Or several other activities.
And nothing has clicked.
That doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with your child.
It may simply mean they haven’t found the right environment yet.
Martial arts is different enough from traditional team sports that children who haven’t connected with other activities often discover something completely different here.
They can progress individually while still being part of a team.
They can be challenged without competing for playing time.
They can become physically stronger while also developing confidence, focus, discipline, respect, and perseverance.
And most importantly, they can experience success.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my child need to be athletic to start martial arts?
Absolutely not. Athleticism isn’t a requirement. Martial arts can help children develop balance, coordination, strength, flexibility, and overall fitness as they train.
Is martial arts good for kids who don’t like team sports?
Yes. Martial arts allows children to progress individually while still enjoying the friendships, encouragement, and community of training alongside other students.
What if my child has poor coordination?
That’s okay. Coordination is a skill that can improve with practice. Students work on kicks, footwork, balance, combinations, and other movements that gradually develop better body control.
Will my child have to compete?
No. Competition is completely optional. Some Mentor ATA students enjoy martial arts as a hobby and focus on learning curriculum and earning belts. Others choose to compete at the highest levels. Both paths are available and both are celebrated.
What ages can start at Mentor ATA?
We offer age-specific martial arts classes for children ages 4 and up, including Tiny Tigers for ages 4–6 and Kids Martial Arts beginning at age 7.
What if we’ve already tried several activities and my child quits everything?
Give martial arts a chance. Its combination of individual progress, clear goals, physical activity, friendships, and belt advancement makes it very different from many traditional activities. Sometimes a child simply needs to find the place where they finally feel successful.
There Is a Place for Your Child Here
We love our naturally athletic students.
We love our competitors.
We love the kids who seem like they were born to do martial arts.
But we also love the kid who walks through our doors believing they’re not good at anything athletic.
Because we’ve seen what can happen next.
Give them time.
Give them great instructors.
Give them encouragement.
Give them goals.
And teach them to keep showing up.
Six months later, they’re different.
A few years later, they may be the student everyone else looks up to.
Your child doesn’t have to be the kid every other sport wants.
They just have to be willing to learn.
We’ll take it from there.
